Be part of MK's 50th Birthday celebrations
People in Milton Keynes are being urged to make sure they get stuck in to enjoy next year’s bumper celebration of the 50th birthday of Milton Keynes.
On 23 January 2017 Milton Keynes will be 50 years old, and throughout 2017 we’re celebrating locally and sharing with the world that Milton Keynes is an amazing place to live, work and visit.
Milton Keynes Council is co-ordinating the 50th anniversary, with the support of key partners, to provide a programme of events throughout 2017 which includes: exhibitions, walks and trails, interactive public art, parties, festivals and international collaborations.
MK50 will provide an inclusive programme of events and activities at all scales, enabling people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to be part of the celebrations.
Throughout a year-long programme of activities, we will celebrate Milton Keynes and its pioneers, creating shared memories and profile its architecture, design, green spaces, culture and people.
We will be announcing the full programme later in the summer – and there are a few surprise events lined up as well.
But in the meantime members of the public are being invited to plan ahead and think about activities they can organise to be part of these three city-wide events:
Birthday Weekend - (20 to 23 January 2017)
This is your chance to celebrate the actual Birthday of Milton Keynes (on 23rd January 2017) with an event or activity in your community, organisation or venue. We are asking venues across Milton Keynes to open their doors for free, hold an open day and put on some celebratory events for local people.
For those organisations that charge entry normally, as we want this celebration to be accessible, if you can offer 100 free tickets (and slices of cake) we will put them into an online ballot.
Let’s Party Like its 1967 - (23/24 June 2017)
We are taking everyone back to the 60s and encouraging the whole city to party like its 50 years ago. Whether you want to hold a street party, a party in the park or rent out your community centre, we want to hear about your event. Use our online events toolkit to ensure you are planning the best event you can.
We are also working with major city centre venues to organise a big CMK party event – with 60s music and dancing.
MK50 Heritage Open Days - (7 to 10 September 2017)
Our annual Heritage Open Days event will be themed to MK50 for 2017, we will be looking for free heritage events that celebrate:
• Milton Keynes’ architecture, design and unique identity
• Milton Keynes’ pioneers, heritage and culture
• Milton Keynes as ‘Tomorrow’s City’ of innovation
So get your thinking caps on and start planning how you will be part of the 50th celebrations.
Go to our 'GET INVOLVED' section which will also have more information about the different events as they get confirmed from autumn 2016, and about how to register your own event – registration will open September 2016.
