Bletchley Park helps celebrate MK50

Date Posted:28/07/2017

On 23 July, Bletchley Park visitors explored the historical grounds and enjoyed an afternoon of fabulous fifties music from The Swinging Bass Band. Hits from Frank Sinatra and the Rock and Roll era were played to celebrate Milton Keynes’ 50th birthday.

After discovering the once top-secret home of the Codebreakers, visitors learned all about the activities Codebreakers got up to whilst they weren’t working. One of the newest exhibitions Off Duty: High Spirits in Low Times explains that music formed a large part of the off duty activities for Bletchley Park staff in World War Two. Concerts were sometimes held at the site to keep people in good spirits during the war and many of the Codebreakers and their colleagues were talented musicians themselves.

The event was a success with over 1400 visitors on the day. The event is the first in a series of concert events running throughout July and August. Even the resident swans enjoyed the day.
